Description

This medication thins the blood and prevents blockage of blood vessels. It acts on certain blood elements involved in the coagulation process. Typically, it is used for the prevention of blood clots. It may also be used for deep vein thrombosis (blood clots) or for pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lungs).

Instructions

Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed. The capsule of this medication should not be opened, crushed or chewed.

It must be used regularly and continuously to maintain its beneficial effects. Be sure to keep an adequate supply on hand. You should take this medication at approximately the same time each day.

If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember -- unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not double the next dose to catch up. This medication may be taken with or without food.

To ensure effectiveness, avoid taking an antacid within 2 hours (before or after) of this medication.

Side Effects

In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:

  • it may cause anemia (low red blood cells);
  • it may reduce your blood clotting ability.
  • it may cause indigestion;

Each person may react differently to a treatment. If you think this medication may be causing side effects (including those described here, or others), talk to your doctor or pharmacist. He or she can help you to determine whether or not the medication is the source of the problem.

Storage

Make sure that any leftover portion is disposed of safely. To remain effective, this product must be kept in its original packaging. Do not transfer it to another container. As with most medications, this product should be stored at room temperature. Store it in a secure location where it will not be exposed to excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight.

Additionnal Information

This product may increase the risk of bleeding. Be careful when using sharp instruments or when you practice any activity or sport that may result in serious injury. The use of a soft-bristled toothbrush and an electric razor is recommended.

Advise your doctor if you notice any sign of bleeding, such as blood in your urine, black or red stools, excessive bruising for no reason, nose bleeds that do not resolve spontaneously or, in women, abnormally abundant and prolonged menstrual bleeding. Contact a doctor immediately if you notice sudden unusual headaches, weakness of an arm or leg, crooked mouth or difficulty speaking.

Always tell healthcare professionals you are visiting (for example, pharmacist, doctor, nurse or dentist) that you are taking this medicine. If you need surgery, you must notify the doctor who will perform the procedure. You may be asked to stop the medication for a few days. Ask your pharmacist or doctor how to start it again, if any.

Blood donation is usually refused during this treatment.

This medication may interact with other medications or supplements, sometimes significantly. Many interactions, however, may be dealt with by a dosage adjustment or a change in medication schedule. Check with your pharmacist before using this medication in combination with any other medications (including non-prescription products), vitamins or natural products.

General Notes

When meeting with any health professional, it is important for you to share the following information:

  • Your medical history and allergies (medication, food, or other);
  • If you smoke, are pregnant, are planning a pregnancy, or are breastfeeding;
  • The names of all the medications you take, whether you take them regularly or once in a while, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and natural health products.
It is also strongly recommended that you keep an up-to-date list of all the medications you take and carry it with you at all times. This could be useful if you have to see a health professional or need emergency care.
