Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. Shingles affects mostly the elderly (50 years or older) and people with weakened immune systems.

Vaccination provides the best protection against shingles and its complications. The vaccine is recommended for people aged 50 years and older and for immunocompromised people aged 18 years and older. It is possible to receive this vaccine directly at the pharmacy.

For Quebec patients: Starting May 2023, the shingles vaccine will be free of charge to some individuals. To find out if you can receive the vaccine for  free, please consult the eligibility criteria on the Gouvernement du Québec website: Shingles vaccination program
